The National Hearing and Speech Institute of Iceland (Heyrnar-og talmeinastöð Íslands) is the center of knowledge in the field of hearing and speech impairments in Iceland. Our services are nationwide and it is our task to serve those who are hearing impaired, deaf or have a speech impairment. The center offers the diagnosis and treatment, sales and services of hearing aids and assistive equipment. The center offers a wide variety of specialists, doctors, hearing therapist (audiologists), speech therapists, psychologist, etc. 

The role and operation of the clinic: We perform our role by offering an extensive service in the field of hearing and speech impairments for children, adults and their families regardless of the level of the hearing or speech impairment. The hearing and speech center oversees cochlear implants and the rehabilitation of those which undergo such therapy. 

The center is leading in research in the field of hearing and speech impairments in the country. We share knowledge about hearing and speech impairments to both the public as well as to professionals. Our goal is to offer first class health service in the field of hearing- and speech impairments.

We offer diverse education for individuals and organizations.

Interpretation service: In the law nr 74 from 1997 about the rights of patients’ chapter II article 5 says:

II. Information and agreement.
Information about health and treatment.
5th paragraph. A patient has the right to information about:
a. health, including medical information about his/her situation and the prognosis.
b. planned therapy including information about the process, risks and its utility
c. other possible options apart from the planned treatment and the consequences of doing nothing.
d. the possibilities of a second opinion of another doctor or other medical staff according to whether the issue is treatment, situation or prognosis. 

The patients file shall include confirmation that the information in this paragraph has been offered.
The information according to this paragraph shall be offered as quickly as the occasion arises an in a manner in which the patient may understand them.

If the patient is someone who does not speak Icelandic or uses sign language he/she shall be guaranteed interpretation according to this article.

The clients of the Hearing and Speech Center (Heyrnar- og Talmeinastöðvar) which are foreigners have the right to the service of interpreters and therapy from the centers expert. It shall be noted when booking an interview if an interpreter is needed.

Servicio Auditivo y del habla de Islandia es un centro especializado en estudios auditivos y del habla en Islandia. Brindamos servicio a nivel nacional teniendo como cometido atender a aquellos con deficiencia auditiva, sordera o de habla. En el centro se llevan a cabo diagnósticos y tratamientos auditivos y del habla, exámenes auditivos, venta y servicio de aparatos auditivos y dispositivos auxiliares. En el centro laboran un grupo extenso de especialistas, doctores, otorrinolaringólogos, logopedas y sicólogos, entre otros.

Papel y actividades: Mostramos nuestro papel brindando un servicio extenso en el área auditiva y de habla para niños, adultos y sus familias, independientemente del nivel de la deficiencia auditiva o de habla en la que se encuentren. El servicio Auditivo y de logopedia tiene la supervisión del implante coclear (cochlear implants) y entrenamiento para aquellos que lo usan.

El centro conduce investigaciones a nivel nacional en el área auditiva y del habla impartiendo dichos conocimientos a particulares y a especialistas. Nuestro cometido es brindar servicio de primera calidad al servicio de sanidad pública conducida al área auditiva y de logopedia.

Se ofrece también orientación diversa a personas e instituciones.

Servicio de Interpretación: En la ley no.74, de 1997, acerca de los derechos del paciente capítulo II, el art. 5 dice:

II. Información y consentimiento.
Información acerca del estado de salud y tratamiento.
Artículo 5. el paciente tiene derecho de obtener información sobre:
a. estado de salud, entre ellas información médica acerca de su situación y las probabilidades de recuperación.
b. información sobre el tratamiento previsto, su proceso, riesgo y eficacia.
c. otra opción posible aparte del tratamiento establecido y las consecuencias si no se lleva a cabo un tratamiento.
d. la posibilidad de otra opinión médica o la de otro empleado de sanidad social referente al tratamiento, situación
y posibilidades de recuperación.

El historial médico del paciente debe de confirmar que se ha brindado la información contenida en este artículo.
De acuerdo a este artículo, las informaciones deben de darse según se obtengan, bajo condiciones y de
manera que el paciente las entienda. 

Cuando el paciente no hable islandés o use lenguaje de signos manual se le deberá de asegurar la interpretación de la información según el presente artículo. 

Los clientes del Centro Auditivo y del habla de origen extranjero tienen derecho al servicio de interpretación durante la revisión y tratamiento dado por los especialistas del centro. Al reservar cita se debe dar a saber la necesidad del intérprete.
